Phosphating

Phosphating

Chemical conversion coating that prepares metal for paint or provides mild rust protection. Phosphating creates a rough surface that helps paint stick better and last longer. Commonly used in automotive manufacturing as a pre-paint treatment.

Phosphating Process

  • Surface Preparation

Metal parts are cleaned, degreased, and rinsed to remove rust, scale, and contaminants, ensuring the phosphate coating adheres uniformly to the base metal.

  • Phosphate Coating

The parts are immersed in a phosphoric acid solution, which chemically reacts with the metal surface to form a crystalline phosphate layer that improves paint adhesion and corrosion resistance.

  • Rinsing and Inspection

After coating, parts are rinsed and dried. Each piece is inspected for coating weight, crystal structure uniformity, and surface coverage before proceeding to painting or further finishing.
